Mescaline is a naturally occurring psychedelic substance found in several cactus species, most notably, Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) and San Pedro (Trichocereus pachanoi). Several other types of trichocereus family also contain mescaline. Mescaline belongs to a family of compounds known as phenethylamines, making it quite distinct from the other major psychedelic: the ‘indoles’ class. LSD, psilocybin, harmaline and DMT are all indoles. Many synthetic 'designer' drugs such as ecstasy and 2C-B are phenethylamines, and are related to the molecular structure of mescaline. Complementing mescaline, the abovementioned cacti contain numerous related active ingredients, causing experiences that are qualitatively different from those of pure mescaline. The experience produced by, for example, Peyote is therefore quite different than that of the cacti trichocereus kind.

Many of the trichocereus family are psychoactive. Many sources indicate that one species, T. peruvianus, is several times stronger by weight than the other types. Psychoactive types are: Trichocereus bridgesii, T. cuzcoensis, T. fulvinanus, T. macrogonus, T. pachanoi, T. peruvianus, T. taquimbalensis, T. tersheckii, T. validus, T. werdermannius.

Peyote and San Pedro are so-called New World psychedelics. Previously, its use was restricted to the regions where they occurred naturally. Peyote was used from Mexico to Texas. San Pedro in the Andean region of South America. The introduction of Peyote in the U.S. and Canada and the use by Native Americans, only started more recently, in the late 19th century. As with the use of mushrooms, the Catholic Church has tried to prohibit this. However, they were only partially successful. The Peyote use spread to North America, and in 1918 the Native American Church was founded to protect the right of Native Americans to use peyote. With the San Pedro there was a ceremony in which South American shamans used Christian symbols in the rituals. A Christian saint is even named after the cactus. Mescaline is the first psychedelic substance to be extracted and isolated, which occurred in 1896. In 1919 it became the first psychoactive substance which was managed to synthesize. In the 35 years that followed, it remained a somewhat obscure substance that was only known to psychiatry. In 1953, popular writer Aldous Huxley read about mescaline, after which he quickly tried it once. By writing his book The Doors of Perception, he made it public. Today, holy Peyote rituals are still performed in North America. And in South America, shamans continue to hold traditional San Pedro ceremonies associated with healing, imparting or counteracting witchcraft, and to connect people with the supernatural. An often-heard claim about the San Pedro experience is that the user starts a telepathic travel between time and space. He can perceive events happening in different parts of the world, or in metaphysical realities. This trip phenomenon might be due to the plants of the nightshade family that are added to the brew which contain Belladonna alkaloids.

Synthetic or pure crystalline mescaline is one of the rarest psychedelic substances, and it so happens that other substances are confused with mescaline. Substances ranging from LSD to DOB (a relative of 2C-B) are sometimes sold as mescaline.

Illegal drug labs rarely produce mescaline for the underground market because of its huge inefficiency, high cost, and lack of a proper market. For a trip, about half a gram of mescaline sulfate is required. The same amount of material is used for four doses of ecstasy, 20 doses of 2C-B, 50 doses of psilocin or 2500 doses of LSD. Since demand is much smaller than that of the above-mentioned substances, inefficient, small batches must be made so that a gram will cost about 100 to 200 dollars: clearly too expensive to be able to be a popular drug.

Mescalin sulfate can be distinguished by the structure of the crystals. They are about half an inch long and look like fine needles or broken glass. The amount required for a light trip will fit in two gelatin caps. Those who claim that they used it as small pills or as white powder in a capsule, have not had real mescaline. Another form, mescaline hydrochloride, appears to be about 25% more powerful than mescaline sulfate.

Once the trip starts, you should sit on a quiet, secluded, semi-dark spot. Preferably as easy as possible, on a couch or chair. You also need to ensure that you find yourself in a trusted and familiar environment. You have to feel good before use, otherwise, you might get a "bad" trip. This means that you might not feel good and even less happy later on. If you have taken the mescaline it takes about half an hour before you feel anything. This is because the agent must be absorbed by the blood first, and then the brain.

When it starts, you´ll see forms change, for example, a round lamp will start to look square. Colors are more intense and sometimes even different. After a while, the trip will begin properly. In a mescaline trip you won´t only see other things, you´ll start thinking different. Either way, you´ll start thinking quite a lot. You will go deeper and deeper into your mind, and after an hour or two, the trip is at its peak where it will remain for about 8 hours. Then it´ll weaken slowly and after about 10 hours, the trip should have ended. You might feel a bit "fuzzy" since you've been through lot the last 10 hours.

Approximately 500 mg of mescaline sulfate is required for a complete trip (or about 350 mg mescaline hydrochloride). Pure mescaline should be taken in two half doses with an interval of 30 minutes. This will cause less stomach aches, which, if occur, usually disappear within the first few hours of the trip. When one consumes cacti, there is a combination of alkaloids which synergistically interact with each other, creating a different and perhaps finer experience than pure mescaline.

Two ways in which you can use.
Drink the liquid solutes little by little. At the same time, drink a little fruit juice, it helps with the bitter taste. Do not drink everything at once! If necessary, you can drink more, if you want a stronger trip. Do not take more than one San Pedro cactus or Peruvian Torch Cactus 40-50 cm length per person!  For first time users: take a half portion in the beginning, so that you can experience the effects.

Chewing on fresh Mescaline Cactus, and let it slowly do its work. Chew on the fabric of a Mescaline Cactus (without thorns!) for some time. The San Pedro Cactus and Peruvian Torch Cactus are slimy and difficult to chew
Try to minimize swallowing Mescaline Cactus. The Mescaline is absorbed through your mucous membranes in your mouth. By only chewing you will not get a super trip!
